Legislation has been introduced in Ontario to require places that serve food to post calories on menus or menu boards.
The bill would require calories for food and beverages, including alcohol, to be posted in restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores and other food service premises with 20 or more locations in Ontario.
It would also allow public health inspectors to enforce menu labelling requirements.
The government says the proposed legislation was developed following consultations with the food industry, health sector and parents.
A 2011 Ipsos Reid poll found that 95% of Ontarians support a move to require fast food restaurants to list nutritional information on their menus.
