Weather Delays Ice Road Construction

Recent mild weather has delayed the construction of the six million dollar northern network of ice roads this winter.
Howie Wilcox, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, says ice must be at least 27 inches thick to support the weight of trucks with freight.
So far, Wilcox says the ice isn’t thick enough on lakes and rivers.
However, he adds it is thick enough to support light equipment to allow construction to begin.
The 2800 kilometre network of ice roads branches off from Red Lake and Pickle Lake to northern First Nations.
The communities depend on the ice roads for deliveries of necessary goods and equipment during the winter.
