Dryden Community Garden Almost Ready To Open

The Dryden Community Garden is gearing up for another growing season.

Committee member Kirsten Sigismund tells us what gardeners can expect.

“It’s going to look a lot like last year, with the same COVID rules in place. We’re just working on getting the final touches up in terms of safety posters, making sure people know what plot they’re assigned to and everyone signs up for their communal weeding duties.”

Sigismund adds they’re working with the City of Dryden and Northwestern Health Unit on health measures and having hand sanitizer available.

With more people taking up gardening during the pandemic, Sigismund says all spots are full this year.

“There’s been somewhat of an increase for us, this year our plots are spoken for and there’s lots of returning gardeners. Planting usually starts for the majority of people around the May Long weekend, just to get that risk of frost out of the way. The benefit of the community garden I would say is you get the crop comradery, the knowledge that already exist and we have the communal shed with tools so it’s a pretty low investment for starting out.”

Those who’ve purchased a plot will be contacted when the garden is ready to open.

If you’d like to be added to the garden’s wait list for a plot next year email scran@nwhu.on.ca.
